Too often we come across homes here in South Florida with bad stains on their windows. This is usually caused from hard water mainly coming from sprinkler systems. The water that is being used in the sprinklers from wells, canals, and other recycled water has hard minerals…..calcium, lime, iron, etc. When this water is sprayed onto the glass and left to sit the minerals are left behind on the glass. Often the sun bakes the minerals into the glass, etching the glass. You will see this on your windows as a foggy white like looking mess.
Usually we can remove the white coloring of the minerals, and if the deposits are fresh we can get these off….too often they are old and leave little etchings on the glass.
The best thing to do is to watch your sprinklers and determine if they are spraying directly on the glass. If so, adjust your sprinkler heads away from your windows. Unfortunately you cannot prevent wind from blowing the water back at your windows, but at least you can minimize the exposure.
